Gamifying Fractions: An Interactive and Engaging Approach to Math Learning in Primary Education
This practice integrates gamification into the teaching of fractions in a 3rd-grade classroom (ages 8–9), making learning more interactive and enjoyable. By incorporating game elements such as points, rewards, levels, and collaborative challenges, pupils become more engaged and motivated. Digital tools like Class Dojo, Wordwall, and Kahoot enhance participation and provide real-time feedback, helping to make abstract concepts easier to understand. These tools enable pupils to receive instant feedback, collaborate in small groups, and progress through learning objectives in a fun and rewarding way.
The lessons follow a structured approach, gradually introducing fractions through storytelling, problem-solving, and teamwork-based activities. This method not only improves mathematical understanding but also fosters a positive and inclusive classroom environment, encouraging collaboration and active participation from all students, including those with learning difficulties. The approach ensures that learning is dynamic, engaging, and tailored to diverse learning styles, helping students build confidence and develop a deeper connection with mathematics. The effectiveness of this practice was evaluated through an empirical research study.
