The sea turtle mission

3 hours' reading

Miguel and Isabel are travelling across the Mediterranean with their father, Antonio, a marine biologist. What starts as an exciting journey soon becomes a mission to help protect the sea. Near Valencia, they come across an oil spill and join rescue teams to assess the damage and organise the clean-up effort. Along the way, they rescue an injured sea turtle named Luna, who is later released back into the wild with a GPS tracker. By following Luna’s signals, they discover more about her journey across the Mediterranean and the challenges marine animals face. Their adventure ends in Zakynthos, where they work alongside local volunteers to clean coastal areas and help protect sea turtle nests.

For teachers

Learning objectives

  • Help pupils connect mathematical thinking—such as coordinates, distance, estimation, and proportional reasoning—to a real-world environmental challenge.
  • Develop understanding of how both surface area and thickness influence the total volume of an oil spill.
  • Show how observation, counting, measurement, and data analysis can support conservation efforts and inform decision-making.
  • Raise awareness of the challenges and risks sea turtles face during their migrations across the Mediterranean.
  • Encourage pupils to explore how human activities affect turtle hatchlings and identify actions that can help reduce these risks.
  • Foster collaboration, critical thinking, and evidence-based decision-making through group discussion and problem-solving activities.
